IN THIS LESSON

This lesson is all about your children. Becoming a parent for the first time takes you into the new role of mum or dad, a role that remains with you for the rest of your life. How did it feel to become a parent for the first time?

Before we move on a few thoughts to consider-

What if you never had any children? You will not need to complete this lesson but perhaps you might like to include a paragraph in your story as to why? Not having children can be a personal decision but it can also be a medical decision. Including medical information may be helpful to future generations especially if a medical condition is genetic.

Adopted children- tell the story of how the adoption came about. How did they fit into your family?

Foster Children- Foster children can be long term or short term. Often there are privacy issues to consider here. How did they fit into your family?

Stepchildren- include stepchildren if they had a significant role in your life. How old were they when they came into your life? How was your relationship with them?

Loss of a child- It is important to include those precious children that didn’t make it whether it be a child lost in utero, a still born or a baby lost shortly after birth. You may not have much to say other than a mention of their existence. If you feel brave, share how you felt. How did others react, how did you cope?

Spend some time thinking about each of your children. How much are they like you? How was your relationship with them when they were a child? Feel free to share a story or two but remember that this is your story not their story, so don't fall into the trap of filling your story with their story.  And, they will most likely read your story so consider what you write about them.

If you are female you might like to share your pregnancy experience(s). Any interesting birth stories?

You could also write about how you felt each time another child was on the way and how each additional child fitted into your family.

In this lesson we just want to introduce your children. In the next module we will talk more about your interaction as a family and also introduce their spouse and children, your grandchildren.

It’s now time to start working on your next worksheet. Click below to download your worksheet and answer the questions. Remember- key words, dot points or short sentences first as we gather the information you will need to write your story.
