Simple Scrapbooking- Part 1

Scrapbook albums provide flexibility when it comes to photos of different orientations and photos of different sizes (particularly heritage photos). Scrapbook albums also allow you to include memorabilia such as certificates, newspaper articles etc.

Often when we think of scrapbook albums we think of highly decorated pages featuring one or two photos. As lovely as they look, scrapbook albums do not need to look like this. Albums are ultimately about the photos and the captions/words. In 20 years, it won’t be the embellishments the person looking through the album will take notice of, it will be the photos and what you have written.

There are many different types of scrapbook albums that you can make:

-       Heritage/family history

-       Wedding

-       Family

-       School

-       Baby

-       Life Story

-       Milestone – 21st, 50th, 80th etc

HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE SCRAPBOOK ALBUM

1.    Choose the right scrapbook album (this was discussed in my previous blog).

2.    Select the photos and memorabilia you want to include in the album.

3.    Plan out what photos/memorabilia will work together on a page. Depending on the page size, you should be able to place up to six photos on a 12 x 12 scrapbook page. These photos will have something in common eg same person/family, same theme/event, same period of time.

4.    Order these groups of photos chronologically so they tell a story eg youngest to oldest, beginning to end. (Not all photos will fit chronologically, just find the best spot for them). You most likely won’t finish your scrapbook in a day so:

a.      download a page planner https://www.memoriesofalifetime.com.au/s/Page-Planner.pdf and make a note of what will go on each page

b.     store the photos, in order, back in your photo box

5.    You are now ready to start a scrapbook page.

WARNING-although a scrapbook album is a great way to display your photos, what you add to the page is crucial in order to preserving the quality of the photos. This includes adhesives and pen ink, as well as papers and embellishments.

In the next blog I will talk about laying out your photos and memorabilia on a page and what scrapbooking products are safe to use with them.
